Design Principles

This week we learned about Harmony, Unity, Symbol, Word & Image.

Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait. It is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit together. They may fit the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.

Unity refers to repetition of particular elements throughout your design - whether they're colours, shapes, or materials. Unity occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.

Symbol is a sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else. In design, symbols can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even a whole story.
  • Pictorial symbols - Image-related and simplified pictures.

  • Abstract symbols - They can look like the objects that they represent but less details.

  • Arbitrary symbols - They have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent.

Word and Image - Using suitable images and choosing the right words to pair with the imagery as it would give meaning to the design. Typography is the design and arrangement of text will result in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.

Exercise 3 - Choose 2 principles from Harmony / Unity / Symbol / Word & Image. Produce 1 design for each chosen principle.

 SYMBOL

Visual research

For Symbol, I decided to do a cafe themed design. I was going to do a design of a cup or a coffee bean, but after looking for more inspirations on google, I found these logos of an espresso machine. I chose to do the machine instead because I thought a lot of people have used the cup or coffee bean design for a coffee shop logo.

Idea exploration

Figure 2.3  Idea exploration sketch

I drew three possible designs that I wanted to use. The first one is an espresso machine, the second one is a coffee maker, and the third one is a french press. I tried playing around with the design and colours first before picking out the final design. I ended up choosing the espresso machine because there are more shapes and options for me to choose from.

Final Outcome for Symbol

Figure 2.4  Final Outcome for Symbol

This is my final outcome for Symbol. I chose this colour combination after going through coffee shop colour palettes I found on google. Most of the colour palettes I saw used warmer tones a lot, such as brown, beige, and red, or they would use dark and muted cool tones.

WORD & IMAGE

Visual research

For Word & Image, I was inspired by designs on birthday cards. The phrase "MAKE A WISH" instantly reminds me of a lit up birthday cake. As for the font and typography, I took inspiration from these pictures that I found on pinterest. I really like the messy handwriting and doodle style, so I'm going to try to add that to my design.

Idea exploration before the feedback

Figure 3.4   Idea Exploration Sketch

This is the main idea for my design, I was going to draw the cake but ended up using an existing photo instead. I looked through my camera roll and found these photos from my cousin's birthday. I couldn't pick which photo to use so I tried the design on all of them.

Final Outcomes before the feedback

 Figure 3.5  Final Outcome 1

This is the first final outcome of my design. I liked it as it is, but after asking for other people's opinions, I realized the design was too plain so I added candles on the cakes.

Feedback from the lecturer

Ms. Jinchi mentioned that I should have chosen a better picture to represent the cakes. The photos above are blurry and not in good quality. She said I should try doing a typography using digital editing softwares instead of drawing the letters because it looks messy. She also said I should try making a collage from pictures I found online.

Idea Exploration after the feedback

After looking through pinterest, I found these pictures of Joy, a Kpop singer, from her solo debut album. This concept was for her song "Happy Birthday to You". I thought the concept fit perfectly for theme I'm going for.

After finding the photos I want to use, I made a few sketches on how I want the placement to be. I ended up going with the first one because I liked the simplicity.

Final Outcome after the feedback

After making the final design, I thought of adding an image of crumpled paper on top of the design to add more texture. I also liked how it made it look like an old poster.
