Design Principles

On our second week we learned about Balance, Emphasis, Repetition, and Movement.

Balance is the distribution of visual weight. It is a visual elements that causes the image to appear balanced. Balance can be symmetrical and asymmetrical.

Emphasis is used to create dominance or focus on an object. It can be in the form of a shape, colour, or value. The main goal is to create a distinct part that stands out from the rest of the design.

Repetition is repeating an element many times in a design. Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a sense of movement within an artwork.

Movement is the way a design leads the eye in, around, and through a composition. It can be shown by the flow of the objects in the artwork, their arrangement, and pattern.

Exercise 2 - Choose 2 principles from Balance / Emphasis / Repetition / Movement. Produce 1 design for each chosen principle.

APPROXIMATE BALANCE

Visual Research

Figure 2.2

Shown in the images above, there is an almost equal division in these image, however the subject matter on both sides are not the same. This is called Approximate Balance. I chose these images as the inspiration for my design because I liked how the design is not symmetrical but it still looks balanced and cohesive.

Idea Exploration
Figure 2.3 Rumah Gadang

Figure 2.4

Initially I was going to draw a traditional house from Indonesia since there is a range in variety of "rumah adat", like the Rumah Gadang from Padang. I did like how it looked but it felt like something was missing. I did more research and looked for other Indonesian architectures. After playing around with the design, I ended up choosing Pura Ulun Danu Bratan in Bali. I chose this temple because it is located near the mountains and a lake so that can be added into the design, instead of it just being mountains.

Final Outcome

This is the final outcome of my Approximate Balance design.

REPETITION

Visual Research

Closed composition

As you can see, the repeating images of the butterflies forms a pattern, starting from small butterflies to bigger ones. Same with the lizard, Instead of putting them next to each other, putting them face to face creates a pattern. The pattern increases visual excitement to avoid monotony in the picture. I want to use that same element to my design.

Idea Exploration

Figure 3.3

Figure 3.4

For this design, I was inspired by the tiles in my house. I noticed there are repeating elements in the tiles, such as the flowers, so I tried using that for my design. After a playing around with the design, removing and adding elements I thought would look nice, I ended up this closed composition design.

Final Outcome

Figure 3.5

This is the Final outcome of my Repetition design. I used the same colour palette as the tiles I was inspired by because I liked how the colour looked together.

Brief Reflection
This week's lecture and exercise was quite easy to follow. Ms. Jinchi also gave use very useful advice and feedbacks on our artworks.
