Introduction to Pattern Drafting and Garment Making
This week, Mr. Riza taught us some basic hand stitching. He also gave us an in depth tutorial on how to do those stitches. There are 5 stitches that he showed us :
- Running stitch
This is the most basic method of sewing. The stitch is made by running the needle in and out the fabric in a regular distance.
- Basting stitch
This method is used for temporary stitching that will later be removed. Basting stitch is used for many reasons, such as holding seams in place until it is sewn properly or transferring pattern markings onto garment.
- Backstitch
Backstitch is a great method to use when you want to make a straight stitch line. It is most used in embroidery to outline shapes or add fine detail to an embroidered picture. It is also often used when embroidering letters.
- Herringbone stitch
This is a stitch that creates a fabric pattern resembling a herringbone pattern.
- Invisible stitch
This is a sewing method of joining two pieces of fabric so that the thread is "invisible". Invisible stitching hides stitching under the folded edged, therefore, this type of stitch can be used when you want to make a clean stitch.
